Alice was written in 1865, exactly three years after the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed in a boat on the River Thames, with three young girls: [4]

* Lorina Charlotte Liddell (aged 13, born 1849) ( "Prima" in verse preface)
* Alice Pleasance Liddell (aged 10, born in 1852) ( "Secunda" in the preface to verse)
* Edith Mary Liddell (aged 8, born in 1853) ( "Tercia" in verse preface)

The three girls were daughters of Henry George Liddell, the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and Dean of the Church of Christ, as head of Westminster School. Most of the adventures of book are based on and influenced by people, situations and buildings in Oxford and the Church of Christ, for example, the "Rabbit Hole", which symbolized the royal flush in the back of the main room in the Church of Christ. It is believed that a carving of a griffin and the rabbit, as seen in Ripon Cathedral, where Carroll's father was a canon, a source of inspiration for the story [5].

The journey had begun at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. To pass the time the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story, not so coincidentally, there is a bored little girl named Alice who goes in search of adventure.

The girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. After a long time – over two years – and finally did on 26 November 1864 gave Alice the manuscript manuscript of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, with illustrations by Dodgson himself. Some, like Martin Gardner, speculate there was a version earlier that was destroyed later by Dodgson himself when printing an additional copy made by hand (Gardner, 1965), but not known prima facie evidence to support this.

But before Alice received her copy, Dodgson was already preparing for publication and expanding the original 15,500-word than 27,500 words, particularly adding the episodes about the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Tea-Party. In 1865, Tale of Dodgson was published as Alice in Wonderland "Lewis Carroll" with illustrations by John Tenniel. The first print run of 2,000 was held back because Tenniel objected to the print quality. [6] A new edition, published in December the same year, but carries a 1866 date, was quickly printed. As it turned out, the original edition was sold with Dodgson permission of the publisher of New York Appleton. The junction of the Alice Appleton was virtually identical to that of Alice 1866, Macmillan, except in the editor's name at the foot of the spine. The title page Alice Appleton of an insert of the cancellation of the original title page Macmillan, 1865, and bearing the imprint of New York and the date 1866.

Printing all sold quickly. Alice was a bestseller, beloved by children and adults alike. Among his early avid readers were young Queen Victoria and Oscar Wilde. The book has never been out of print. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has been translated into 125 languages. So far there have been more than a hundred editions of the book, as well as countless adaptations in other media, especially theater and film.
